What is the Global Talent Stream?

 

Global Talent Stream is part of Canada’s Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWP) program and is used when there is a shortage of manpower and skilled workers and positions cannot be filled by Canadians or Permanent Residents is designed to.

The Global Talent Stream helps innovative Canadian companies access top global talent. This stream is for companies that are referred to the Canadian Employment and Social Development Agency by their designated referral partner and need skilled and professional foreign nationals to grow. It is also aimed at companies with high demand and advanced qualifications on the Global Talent Occupations List.

The Global Talent Stream is a two-step process. First, an employer submits a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application demonstrating the positive or neutral impact on the Canadian labor market when the employer employs a foreign national. Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) aims to process Global Talent Stream applications within 10 business days. Once this application has been processed, the foreign worker can apply for a work permit.

There are two categories under the Global Talent Stream:

Category A:

This category is for companies that have been referred to the Canadian Bureau of Employment and Social Development by their designated referral partners and are in need of specialized foreign nationals to fill high demand positions.

Category B:

This category is for employers interested in hiring foreign professionals for positions on the Global Talent Occupations List. Jobs on this list are in demand and workers are in short supply in Canada.

What are the Global Talent Stream employer requirements?

Employers in both categories are required to develop an employment benefit plan that demonstrates the employer’s commitment to activities that have a lasting and positive impact on the Canadian job market. Category A employers must commit to providing jobs to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, while Category B employers must commit to increasing investment in skills and training for Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

In addition, employers in both categories must commit to two additional benefits and have at least one job for each benefit. These complementary benefits include job creation, joint or internship programs, training current employees in new technologies, and having employees implement the employer’s best practices or policies. but not limited to:
