Thai FDA warns against use of liquid nitrogen in food and drinks.
Restaurants have been advised by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) to use liquid nitrogen sparingly when cooking food and beverages or face imprisonment or significant fines if the material is abused and has negative effects on customers.
In addition, TFDA Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Withid Sariddeechaikool issued a warning to consumers not to consume food or beverages that have been combined with liquid nitrogen. He noted that liquid nitrogen can be extremely harmful to body tissues when inhaled, touched, or consumed and that ingesting it directly can cause unconsciousness.
He advised consumers to wait until all the gas has dissipated before eating food that has been mixed with liquid nitrogen, or if they are unsure, desist from doing about the quality.
He stated that proprietors of restaurants may face two years in prison and/or a punishment of 20,000 baht if the liquid nitrogen they employ in food or drinks endangers customers, citing directives given by the Ministry of Public Health.
The Indonesian government has issued a warning against the usage of liquid nitrogen in foods and beverages after many kids experienced stomach problems after consuming a local snack mixed with the substance.
Mouth-eating is a new ploy to attract customers, but the substance can damage body tissues, he said.
